Attention Tex-Mex lovers and habanera pepper cravers. If the term ‘hotstuff’ automatically refers to anything you cook, then the sixth Annual Chili Cook-off is made to order. This cooking contest, scheduled to take place, Saturday, October 6th, under a tent on the banks of the Hudson River at Henry Hudson Waterfront Park, is a perfect place to showcase a tried-and-true chili recipe. Best in show take home a check for $500.00. Second place? Then the prize is $300.00. Third garners $150.00. Not bad for a concoction of beans, tomatoes and who-knows-what secret ingredients.

Well, actually, we’re looking to expand the definition of chili to include dessert chilies, seafood chilies and even chocolate chilies. So be inventive!

Rules are posted at But they are pretty simple. Each entrant must pay a $10.00 enrollment fee (to discourage no-shows) by September 26th, it is $20.00 after that, and bring 5 gallons of their best chili. Set up starts an hour before admission. Tables and chafers with sterno will be provided.

The public is doing the judging so there should be a pretty lively competition. The day is fun and a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Last year we had over 1200 pay the $5.00 admission to come through the gates and try the selections.

To make things even more enjoyable, the committee is also offering a $100.00 prize for best table decoration. It’s not required, but the more decoration, the more fun. Whether stuffed rattlesnakes, chili-pepper lights or sombreros and serapes, it adds to the festivities.

The Chili Contest runs from noon until 4:00pm, judging stops at 3:30pm, and is designed to showcase the talents of great cooks and lovers of Tex-Mex. It is scheduled to occur on the same weekend as Arts Walk, the Council on the Arts’ biggest annual event. It is hoped that art enthusiasts will want to take the time to come down to the river’s edge and participate. It should be a great day with crisp air, turning leaves, the Hudson River view, a rock band and yummy food.
